Suffolk Flora Preservation Trust

Book Launch for the trust’s new book Wilding and Wellbeing

Wilding and Well-being: Suffolk Flora Preservation Trust's sixth annual volume in the Adult Education Series will be launched by the Hon. Editors, at 6 pm on Friday  6th December, at the Aldeburgh bookshop.

Editor Rose Battye will say: "For the 2019 annual book, we decided to examine the effectiveness of the Trust's actions in two aspects of its purpose:  'permanent preservation', and 'public benefit'. This led us to the title ‘Wilding and Well-being’. We had no idea what was coming. After choosing the title, international summits and conferences have followed one after the other.   In Paris, May 2019, the UN published the Intergovernmental Science Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystems (lPBES) report which said the Earth faces unprecedented threats to Biodiversity.  Sir Robert Watson, chair of IPBES, said “The report also tells us it’s not too late to make a difference, but only if we start now at every level from local to global.” Local is what the Suffolk Flora Preservation Trust is about, and wilding turns out to be what we have been striving for on the Trust's two reserves."

Editor Janey Cullen will say: "From the point of view of public benefit, and from our own lives,  we know that a visit to either of the Trust's reserves provides an uplifting and calming escape from the daily stresses and strains.  With so much pleasure we discovered that the wildlife experience is a strong source of mental and physical benefit to many other people, and can help an individual feel content, grounded and healthy.  Personal contributions fill almost one quarter of this 108 page volume.  In addition 75 coloured plates offer a rich and enticing sample of the wildlife treasures from which well-being arises.."

Trust Chairman, Gathorne Cranbrook will conclude: " The Trustees were inspired by the Editors' initiative. Supported by a resolution at the January AGM, during 2019 volunteer survey parties have assessed our management for effectiveness in wilding the Trust's reserves. We also engaged a contractor to undertake landscaping works deliberately to remove intrusive features and create new wild spaces. By these measures, we have enhanced opportunities at every turn for the visitor to become immersed in the wildlife experience offered by these two places of hidden magic in East Suffolk. The full story unfolds in the pages of this volume for 2019."
